The Shelter to Soldier team welcomed Bella into our program through the generous Red Star Sponsorship of Logomark and our rescue partners at Labs & More.
From the moment our team met Bella, we knew she was something special. Though just a growing pup, she wasn’t your typical rambunctious ball of energy. Bella was calm, affectionate, and had a way of looking right into your soul with her warm golden eyes. We knew she was destined to become an incredible service dog for a veteran in need.
Shawn, a proud U.S. Navy veteran, served during the Gulf War, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom. In 2017, he graduated from the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center and now helps protect our borders. Through the VA, Shawn found himself needing something more for his everyday life and found our programs at Shelter to Soldier.
Bella took to her training quickly, showing a love for learning and a particular fondness for outings to the local park and the occasional pup cup treat. After being matched with Shawn, the two hit an unexpected hurdle. Bella suffered a leg injury in November 2024. Her recovery was slow, and she wasn’t fully healed until June 2025. But that didn’t deter Shawn. Throughout Bella’s recovery, he remained by her side, visiting her weekly, showering her with love, and making sure she was always stocked with her favorite toys and treats.
Thanks to their unwavering connection, Bella bounced back as if she had never missed a step. Now, the two are are at the end of their journey through the program, and we couldn’t be more excited to send Bella home for good, ready to walk alongside Shawn in his healing journey.
If it wasn’t for Shelter to Soldier and all the great staff and handlers, I would not be in the position I’m in. My dog Bella has been the world to me and helped me tremendously with even the day-to-day tasks. She has fit in with my family easily. Thanks again for everything you guys do.
