The Shelter to Soldier team adopted Annie from the Bonita Animal Shelter under the generous Red Star Sponsorship of Matsuri and Seven Woods Foundation.
Robert is a U.S. Army combat veteran who deployed to Iraq in 2009 and Afghanistan in 2012. During his service, he was awarded the Purple Heart for his bravery in the line of duty. Like many veterans, Robert’s experiences led to lasting challenges, including post-traumatic stress (PTS) and a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Despite these hardships, he remained committed to helping others and pursued a career as a therapist.
For years, Robert found comfort and support in a beloved companion who played a crucial role in managing his symptoms. After his companion’s passing in 2021, Robert took the time he needed to heal before he felt ready to welcome another four-legged partner into his life. Eventually, he applied to our ESA program and was matched with Annie. The bond was immediate, and together they completed the program, graduating as a team in October 2024.
But Robert didn’t stop there. Determined to reach his full potential, he continued training with Annie to become a certified service dog team—all while pursuing his doctorate in psychology. On April 8, 2025, Robert and Annie graduated once again, this time as a fully qualified service dog team. Around the same time, Robert also earned his doctorate, achieving two incredible milestones in one momentous week.
We are beyond proud of Robert’s resilience, drive, and unwavering commitment to personal growth and healing. His journey continues to inspire us all!
