For 25 years, Mark served his country as a United States Navy SEAL, dedicating his life to a mission greater than himself. After leaving military service, he carried with him the experiences and sacrifices that come with that commitment, and like many Veterans, he found that adjusting to a new chapter brought its own challenges.
Throughout his life, one constant remained: his connection with dogs. Mark has always understood the unique bond between a person and their canine companion. His dogs have been a source of comfort, companionship, and purpose, a steady presence through both the good days and the difficult ones. After losing his beloved dog of 18 years, Mark needed time to heal before he was ready to welcome another dog into his life.
When Mark discovered Shelter to Soldier, he recognized the opportunity to build a partnership unlike any he had experienced before. During his application process, he shared how much he missed having a dog by his side and how much he looked forward to finding a canine partner who could join him in the activities he loves, from spending time outdoors and camping to eventually returning to the water for paddleboarding adventures.
Mark’s journey led him to Reed.
Reed’s story began with his own second chance. After being surrendered by his previous owner to Animal Friends of the Valleys, Reed was transferred to our rescue partners at Labs & More, where he was given the opportunity to begin a new chapter under the generous Red Star Sponsorship of SD Botox. With the right guidance, patience, and training, Reed showed the qualities needed to become more than just a companion. He showed the potential to become a life-changing partner.
When Mark and Reed met, the connection was clear. Reed’s steady personality and Mark’s lifelong understanding of dogs created the foundation for a meaningful partnership. Together, they began their training journey, learning how to communicate, trust one another, and navigate the world as a team.

From the beginning, Mark showed a natural ability to read Reed and advocate for him. During their early obedience work, they built a strong foundation together, practicing skills like heel, sit, down, recall, and leave-its. Mark’s confidence as a handler continued to grow with each session, and Reed quickly began showing just how capable he was.
As their training progressed, Mark and Reed continued building confidence together. Whether navigating crowds at the harbor, working through public outings, or practicing Reed’s task cues, the two demonstrated the teamwork and trust that make a successful service dog partnership.
Reed’s journey from a surrendered shelter dog to a future service dog is a reminder of the incredible transformations that can happen when a second chance meets the right person. For Mark, this partnership represents more than having a dog by his side. It represents renewed purpose, companionship, and a loyal teammate for the road ahead.
Together, Mark and Reed are proof that sometimes the right partner finds you exactly when you need them most.
