The Shelter to Soldier team adopted Hamburger from Labs & More under the generous Red Star Sponsorship of an anonymous donor!
Belinda is a U.S. Navy veteran who served as a Hospital Corpsman during Operation Iraqi Freedom aboard the USS Eisenhower. During her time on the aircraft carrier, she sustained significant back and shoulder injuries while the ship underwent dry dock and restoration. Unfortunately, she received a series of misdiagnoses and inadequate treatments over the years, leading to chronic mobility issues and the development of anxiety, depression, and panic attacks.
It was through her sister’s experience with a service dog that Belinda first recognized the profound impact such support could have. Inspired by the positive changes she witnessed, Belinda reached out to Shelter to Soldier, hoping that a service dog could help her regain control of her life. She envisioned a future where she could once again fully engage with her family—her three daughters and husband—and enjoy a more active, fulfilling life in the community.
On May 1st, 2024, Belinda had a special “speed-dating” session with Hamburger, and from the moment they met, it was love at first sight. The pair spent their entire hour together cuddling, instantly forming a deep connection. Throughout the program, Belinda learned the profound joy of building a partnership where the dog is not only eager to help but truly wants to work for their handler. It has been incredible to watch their bond grow, with Belinda’s family joining in for playtime and moments of bonding that brought everyone closer. Their hard work paid off when they passed the Public Access Test on December 31st, 2024, making it a perfect way to end the year on a high note.
With graduation set for later this month, Hamburger has already proven to be an invaluable support for Belinda’s mobility, while also filling her life with laughter and joy. We’re excited to see where this wonderful team’s journey takes them next!
