How one dog rescued in San Diego became a life-changing service companion — powered by community, compassion, and UNITE Hair.
Every once in a while, a dog comes through our program that stops everyone in their tracks. Murphy was that dog. From the moment our training team evaluated him, we knew he had something special—an eagerness, a warmth, a heart big enough to help a Veteran in need.
Today, on Murphy’s Adoptiversary, we’re celebrating not just a dog — but a full circle journey that began with a rescue in San Diego and led to one of the most meaningful placements in our program’s history.
Murphy’s story began at Labs & More Rescue—one of our most trusted rescue partners. He was one of the lucky ones, full of potential and waiting for the right door to open.
That door opened in April 2022, thanks to the generous Presenting Sponsorship from UNITE Hair at our 4th Annual Saving Lives, One Swing at a Time Golf Tournament. What started as a fundraising event became the spark that launched a life.
UNITE Hair’s investment didn’t just support a tournament — it put Murphy on the path to purpose.
It didn’t take long for Murphy to become a Shelter to Soldier team favorite. He took to training with focus, joy, and an eagerness that made every session a gift. Watching him grow reinforced what we already felt in our bones: this dog was going to change someone’s world.
Murphy wasn’t just learning commands. He was becoming a lifeline.
We are deeply honored to have placed UNITE Hair’s third sponsored dog through our program (now 5 as of 2026!). Murphy represents something bigger than one placement — he is a testament to what happens when a mission-driven brand shows up for veterans with consistency and heart.
UNITE Hair has now powered lives transformed through Shelter to Soldier. That is a legacy.
When the time came to place Murphy, there was no question. Murphy found his person in Aaron — a US Navy Veteran who would go on to show the world what a service dog can truly unlock in a person’s life.
Murphy stepped into Aaron’s life ready to serve and ready to simply be present in all the ways only a trained service dog can.
The transformation we’ve witnessed in Aaron has been nothing short of extraordinary. He has become one of our biggest program advocates — sharing openly, honestly, and with profound courage the impact Murphy has had on his daily life. His willingness to tell that story has inspired more people than he may ever know.
Aaron is doing things he never thought he’d be able to do. Getting out. Engaging with the world. Living on his own terms. Murphy doesn’t just accompany Aaron through daily life — he opens doors that once felt permanently closed.
That is the power of this program. That is the power of a bond between a veteran and his dog.
