Penny is an adorable young shepherd mix that we adopted from Thrive Animal Rescue through Kelly, one of their foster partners in Huntington Beach. Kelly heard of this sweet girl roaming near the freeway as a stray in Riverside, CA and immediately jumped in to help Penny on behalf of Thrive. Despite her life as a stray, Penny is very confident, balanced, happy and eager to work for treats, affection and playtime. She is wonderfully social and super sweet. We are so happy to have her in our program and look forward to her future with a veteran in need!

Penny has grown from puppy to adult and during the course of her upbringing, has learned how to be a great psychiatric service dog (still in training). She is trained at an advanced level, has completed the majority of her public access training requirements, and is task trained in commands that will one day serve the needs of her veteran handler. She is currently “dating” veterans and will hopefully find her match soon!

Penny was generously sponsored by Jack and Nanci Simkin.
This girl has spunk to spare and she still hasn’t fully grown into her bunny ears. Penny loves to play, and I love playing with her. Her mannerisms are really adorable, she’s one of those dogs that just make you laugh. She’s doing much better around distractions during her public access training, the wiggles have subsided considerably and she’s far more focused. She knows all of her commands and task queues. We’re working on polishing her up for her veteran handler she’ll soon be working with.” – Vince Martell, Shelter to Soldier Service Dog Trainer
