Desmond was one of 49 mastiffs rescued by the San Diego Department of Animal Services from a local hoarding situation. We adopted this sweet puppy from their Central Shelter. Desmond was affectionately named by his sponsors, the Petco Foundation, through an online poll of supporters who chose the name after Desmond Doss, the United States Army Corporalwho saved lives during WWII as an unarmed Army medic.

Desmond is doing wonderfully in his training and truly enjoys his supportive task work. His obedience is very impressive and he loves to work. Desmond has had a career change, and will be placed as an Emotional Support Dog (ESD) with an approved veteran through our program. Though his training is soaring, he is not able to overcome some confidence issues from early life in public settings, a very important trait to become a service dog.

Desmond’s adoption, housing, care and placement was generously sponsored by the Petco Foundation. This is the second dog sponsored by the Petco Foundation, who continue to be huge advocates of our program throughout San Diego and across the nation through their Helping Heroes grant.
